During a recent conversation, renowned performer Fiona Shaw opened up about her diverse career spanning multiple decades and iconic roles.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

When discussing her unforgettable funeral speech in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw revealed that the initial version included stronger language. "I did say a distinct term in my speech," she clarified, "and the writer wanted the studio would approve it."

The actress described the unusual shooting circumstances for this specific moment. "While I delivered that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was completely alone in a huge soundstage, with neither director nor crew members present in the room."

Speaking about the forthcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We've just finished shooting it," she stated, "and what an actor typically doesn't see is the final film."

The actress commended filmmaker Georgia Oakley as "truly wonderful and very assured." The production took place in beautiful estates throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the nineties version of Persuasion, portraying Mrs. Croft. "Our filmmaker had specific requirements: without hairpieces and just candle illumination," she recalled. "He genuinely wanted to recreate the feeling of early 19th century life."

When asked about her experience with the Harry Potter franchise, Shaw spoke fondly about working with her departed co-star. "He represented the most elegant, artistic and talented man," she revealed. "He possessed the most beautiful penmanship and once sent me a note inviting me to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

She described Griffiths as continuously talking and telling interesting stories with herself and the child performers on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would listen captivated to his stories."

Stage Performances

Discussing her New York stage role in the tragedy Medea, Shaw remembered how psychologically challenging the show was. "I met one of the chorus members three years later, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she shared.

This theatrical work had an extensive run, starting in Dublin, then traveling to England, followed by Washington DC, the New York venue, and finally Broadway. "We became very close as a cast," she noted.

Approach to Acting

Regarding inquiries concerning her ability to transition between comedy and drama, Shaw clarified that "comedy connects us as it's about breaking conventions." Nevertheless, she confessed that "the night before a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to find the rhythm during performance."

The actress continued: "I am in life sometimes quite scatty so maybe it's redemptive for me to play very intelligent, organized characters. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I avoid criticizing them. Don't be scared – approach and greet me!"

Discussing her celebrated interpretation of the poetic work The Waste Land, Shaw expressed her deep connection with words and verse. "My heart is always in the language," she stated, "because the clues to everything are there in the selection of vocabulary."

The actress thinks that "verse constitutes the polished form of language, or the instant that's been preserved." As individuals boil down to what they genuinely wish to express, it's frequently lyrical."

Concerning her praised spoken-word performances, particularly Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Shaw shared that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated everybody I knew into it – my friends and fellow performers."

The actress recounted a particular memory of their initial encounter: "He left a message on my voicemail which said, 'I wonder, would you assist me with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

The actress also described Malick's distinctive method of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene inside or outside?" – inquiries seldom made by other filmmakers. "He exclusively used natural light," she continued, "so you could either perform inside by a window or exterior on location."

Regarding the extensive editing process, Shaw disclosed that "The director requires about three years to complete the movie. I had been told by the producer following twenty-four months that I was likely among the main characters, but when the film came out, I was mostly removed."

The actress finished by describing Malick's distinctive approach: "He constructs this massive framework, and he takes away many components. He essentially deconstructs films."
